Writers, I strongly recommend that all of you make a conscious effort to find a copy, and read this book. It'll make you think about the characters you create and the situations you put them in.

Red Shirts is a Star Trek-like story about an gentleman, Andrew Dahl, who's just graduated from the Fleet Academy and has been assigned as an Ensign to the USS Intrepid, the Fleet's flagship vessel. We, the audience, learn that Andrew and his colleagues all have unique dreams and back stories. In their world they are living breathing creatures; but soon, Andrew and his pals begin to notice things are a little fishy on the USS Intrepid. Why does their ship have the highest causality rating of the entire fleet? Why does their Captain constantly leave the ship and lead expeditions on alien planets? Why hasn't Lt. Kerensky died, despite his laundry list of injuries including electrocution, poisoning, and being crushed by rocks? Most importantly, why are the low-ranking Ensigns dying in ridiculous, and record breaking, fashion? It's not long before Andrew and his crew mates learn that they're nothing more than tiny details in a large picture, and their only reason for living is die...terribly.

Read the book and then think about your NPCs and the situations they've been put into. Awesome stuff.

Late reply on this but it's hilariously true.
